Sketchbooks

An A4 size sketchbook is ideal for beginners. As you become more experienced, you may find you prefer a different size. Try to use spiral bound sketchbooks with thick paper.

Painting materials

Silk paints

Silk paints can work on all/most fabrics. Depending on what fabric you use, you will achieve a different effect. Silk paints work most effectively on silk fabrics.

Fabric paints

Most fabric paints work well on cotton, and will work well on some cotton-mix fabrics. Always read instructions on the paints before you begin.

Embroidery threads

There is a wide variety of embroidery threads available.

Needles

These come in a range of sizes:

  • The crewel/embroidery needle is the most commonly used needle; it has a sharp point and a big eye.
  • Chenille needles are suitable for use with coarse fabrics.
  • A beading needle is a very fine needle used for sewing beads.

Threads

Threads come in a wide variety of colours and thicknesses. Depending on the type of thread you use, you can create various textures. Silk and metallic threads can give an interesting texture and a glitzy shine. The most common thread used for embroidery is six-strand cotton or silk embroidery thread.

Dressmaker’s shears

A good, quality pair of dressmaker’s shears is vital for cutting fabric.

Embroidery scissors

A fine, small pair of sharp embroidery scissors is needed to cut threads.

Unpicker

An unpicker is an essential tool for correcting mistakes. It cuts the threads easily and cleanly.

Embroidery hoops and frames

Hoops are needed when the fabric needs to be taut. Hoops will need to be used for embroidering and painting.

Other equipment you may need include a tape measure to measure fabric, tailor’s chalk to mark the fabric, and a thimble to protect the needle finger.
