Aman group

The Aman group is a voluntary group for mothers and toddlers, working at the Rotunda centre in Slough. When it first started, the purpose was to provide Asian women with a support network and an opportunity to socialise. English classes were always available to help them with their language skills.

Now, 20 years on, it has developed in many ways, allowing women not only to socialise but also to learn key skills like communication. It provides an opportunity for participants to get involved in creative events in a safe and friendly environment. The very young, their mothers, and their carers all work together in a creative atmosphere, free from pressure at a time that suits them.

Three woomen from the Aman gorupThe Aman group has worked on a number of textile pieces, ranging from a large textile wall hanging representing Asian village life, to appliquéing an African motif. A range of hand-embellished and painted bags were also produced. Like most of the groups in this project, they are encouraged to explore and develop their cultural heritage, together with influences from their past and present environments to create objects of great beauty and originality.

The Aman group exhibited craftwork at the Slough Museum and the Slough Centre in Autumn 2001. They regularly participate in community events, such as International Women’s Day.

The Aman group meets every Wednesday and Friday at 10.00 – 12.00 at the Rotunda centre. For details, click here.

Stonham Kinara Refuge – Working with Asian women

Catering for women of Asian origin, Stonham Kinara Refuge’s aim is to offer a safe haven in a culturally sensitive atmosphere to Asian women who are victims of abuse, whether emotional or physical. The textile workshops are an opportunity for the women to participate in community-based activities, and are a step forwards in integrating them back into the community, in building confidence, and in helping them realise hidden talents.
Om Mandhi

This is a group of mature women who meet up in one of the women’s houses and there participate in a number of keep-fit and creative activities.

The group participated in a three week silk painting workshop in which they produced some stunning pieces of art. It was the first time that they had experimented with silk painting.

Yuwati Society

Yuwati is a Slough-based women’s voluntary organization which promotes South East Asian performing arts. Yuwati was founded in 1999, and began with regular classes in the classical and contemporary dances of India. The first project, Golden Dream, aimed to enable housewives, who had not previously had the opportunity, to discover their hidden artistic talents. This was followed by a series of workshops in Indian classical/folk music and dances as part of the Kalpana project, raising awareness of health issues facing the community. In addition to its dance, Yuwati introduced textile workshops with the aim of producing backdrops for their performances.
