Can you tell me your name?

My name is Winston Mendes.

How did you get into teaching the sound engineering course?

Well I got to this point a very long time ago. I discovered music, I was brought to a studio, loved it very much and learnt how to operate everything that was inside it. And then I built my own studio.

So what is unique about what you are offering here, to the students?

What’s unique about what we’re offering is you can have no skills no talent whatsoever, but you can still gain talent by coming and doing the course. You need no qualifications, no special specifications, but you can still join in and gain qualifications from it.

Gain talent – what do you mean by that?

The majority of people that come to do, like, a sound engineering or a music course are either artists who would like to produce their own material, or producers who would like to produce everybody else’s material for them. And we get a lot of people wanting to do these same things – become producers and engineers.

What would you like to say to people who aspire to be sound technicians?

Be adventurous: trial and error is your best source of learning, if you’re not willing to try something you’ll never know if it works or not.
